Day two: Newcastle Island, Westwood Lake. Accommodations Nanaimo.
Recently renamed Saysutshun, this island offers a gentle introduction to Nanaimo. Access is easy via a small foot-passenger ferry from our vibrant downtown waterfront.
History buffs will love exploring the Snuneymuxw Village site and the old sandstone quarry, while the island’s 1930s pavilion, once home to lavish dance parties, offers a glimpse into a glamorous past.
Photographers will find inspiration in the stunning vistas at McKay Point and Giovando Lookout.
For a little adventure, you can add on a kayak paddle ($) around the island or rent a bicycle ($) to explore its scenic trails.
After your island visit, enjoy some time exploring Nanaimo’s lively waterfront — watch seaplanes and boats come and go, and maybe treat yourself to some freshly caught fish and some chips right by the water.
From saltwater to freshwater — Westwood Lake is a beloved recreational spot in Nanaimo. Originally created as a hydroelectric reservoir in the early 1900s and later designated a city park in 1957, it’s now known for its 5.5 km trail encircling the lake, perfect for walking, running, or biking.
The lake is also popular for swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding, and nearby trails offer more opportunities to stretch your legs after a long flight or car ride. This is the perfect place to unwind, explore, and capture some beautiful photos.
Day three: Englishman River Falls, Coombs and goats on the roof, Cathedral Grove. Accommodations Port Alberni.
Situated along the pristine Englishman River, north of Nanaimo, this park features two stunning waterfalls cascading into a deep canyon. Depending on recent rainfall, the falls can range from a gentle showpiece to a roaring spectacle that might leave you a little wet if you get too close!
Enjoy a 2–3 km hike to see the best viewpoints. The trail includes uneven ground, roots, and stairs — so bring good footwear and take your time.
A must-see stop! Known affectionately around the world as Goats on the Roof, this quirky market offers an array of unique shops, local crafts, and tasty treats. We’ll stop here for lunch and give you time to explore this beloved island icon.
"The trees are our castles and the mountains are our cathedrals.”
Cathedral Grove is one of the most accessible old-growth forests on Vancouver Island, protecting a globally significant stand of giant Douglas firs within the Coastal Western Hemlock Biogeoclimatic Zone.
Stroll through a network of peaceful trails beneath towering trees — some more than 800 years old and one measuring over 9 metres in circumference. These ancient giants are truly awe-inspiring, offering a glimpse of a forest untouched by the modern world.
This hidden gem is named after a resurgence spring that flows directly through a limestone rock wall. Visitors are often amazed by the size and sheer volume of water that bursts forth here. Surrounded by lush vegetation and dramatic blue-gray limestone cliffs, this natural wonder is both beautiful and easily accessible — just a short 40-metre walk from the road.
Day four: Tofino, Long Beach, Ucluelet. Accommodations Port Alberni.
We’ll get an early start today so we have plenty of time to enjoy the sights along the way to the true West Coast of Canada — next stop, Japan!
As we leave Port Alberni, we’ll pass the sparkling waters of Sproat Lake and follow the route of the Taylor River, Kennedy River, and Kennedy Lake before reaching the rugged coastline.
For those seeking a little extra adventure, there’s an optional stop to go ziplining ($) along the way.
Once we arrive, you’ll have lots of time to explore Long Beach, take in the fresh ocean air, and capture some stunning coastal photos. Then we’ll take a short drive to the charming village of Ucluelet, where you can choose your own spot for lunch — seaside cafés, local seafood, or cozy bakeries await.
Day five: McLean Mill, the Quay, French Creek, Qualicum Beach, Rathtrevor. Accommodations Nanaimo.
Before we leave Port Alberni, we’ll visit the McLean Mill National Historic Site — a former sawmill and logging operation set on 13 hectares of forested land in the Alberni Valley. This fascinating site offers a glimpse into British Columbia’s rich forestry heritage, with original buildings and restored machinery bringing the region’s logging past to life.
We’ll also make a quick stop at the Quay on the canal, where you’ll learn about the devastating tidal wave that surged up the inlet in 1964.
Built in 1963, the Big Qualicum Hatchery was the first modern salmon enhancement project in the province and has since served as a model for others. The hatchery uses innovative spawning channels and enhancement techniques to support populations of Pacific salmon — including Chinook, coho, pink, and chum.
Research conducted here has expanded our understanding of salmon behaviour, life cycles, and habitat needs.
The best viewing time is from late July through December, when the salmon return to spawn.
The French Creek Marina is a fantastic place to spot sea lions in their natural habitat. From September to May, they gather here to feast on salmon and herring runs, though many can be seen year-round. Bring your camera — these playful and vocal creatures are always a highlight!
If it's not the right time of year for the best salmon or sealion viewing we'll head to Rathtrevor Beach, a beautiful provincial park in Parksville known for its long, sandy shoreline stretching nearly 2 km. This 347-hectare park features old-growth trees, scenic walking trails, and a large sandbar revealed at low tide, creating endless opportunities for beachcombing and exploration. It’s the perfect spot to relax, take a stroll, and soak in a classic Vancouver Island sunset.
Day six: Buchart Gardens, Malahat Skywalk, Hand-of-Man museum. Accommodations Nanaimo.
Victoria & Beyond
We’ll take the little Maple Bay ferry and head south to Victoria, the charming capital city of British Columbia, to explore the world-renowned Butchart Gardens. In 1908, this incredible transformation began — turning a depleted limestone quarry into one of the most celebrated garden displays in the world. Today, the gardens are cared for by a team of 50 full-time gardeners, with even more joining during the vibrant spring and summer months.
Next, we’ll visit the breathtaking Malahat SkyWalk — a stunning experience featuring artful driftwood sculptures, an elevated tree walk, a spiral tower, and a 360-degree viewing platform. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of the Salish Sea, Mount Baker, and the distant Gulf Islands — it’s a sight you won’t forget.
Before we head back to Nanaimo, we’ll stop at one of Vancouver Island’s best-kept secrets — the Hand of Man Museum. Prepare to be amazed! This extraordinary collection has earned multiple TripAdvisor awards, including the 2024 Travelers’ Choice Award.
With exhibits ranging from natural history to cultural artifacts and curiosities, there’s truly something here for everyone — young or old, museum enthusiast or casual visitor alike.
